Van Saves Yuna
The Deer KingVan Saves Yuna is the rescue that develops into a lasting bond between Van and Yuna. The memory of finding her in an oven shapes his daily life with her, and his promise to tell her how fiercely her mother loved her keeps the danger and sacrifice behind her survival present even as she grows secure in his care.
The Rescue Remembered
Van thinks back to finding Yuna in the oven and feels fortunate that he did. Their meeting was a twist of fate, but his happiness is rooted in the life that followed: each evening by the hearth, he places her on his lap and watches her face light up at the sight of him. Rescue is no longer only the act that saved her; it has become the beginning of a shared domestic routine.
A Child at Home
Yuna’s attachment to Van is visible in the small, repeated scene of his return. Coming back from a long day’s hunt to the camp at the foot of a gentle slope, he unloads boar meat and raises the tent flap. Yuna leaps up from beside the hearth, delighted to see him, and calls, “Ochan! Ochan home!” Her rush ends in a fall over the edge of a hide Kiya is tanning, and she cries before Kiya can catch her. The stumble interrupts the welcome but also makes it tangible: Yuna runs toward Van as someone who expects him home.
The Mother’s Sacrifice
Van does not know Yuna’s exact age, but estimates she is between one and a half and two. During their journey she remembered her mother and cried, especially at bedtime; now she sleeps soundly against Van’s chest. He suspects that she may no longer remember her mother’s face, yet he cannot let that possibility erase what her mother did. The young woman placed Yuna in the oven and positioned herself in front of it to protect her.
What Van Intends to Preserve
Watching Yuna eat her stew, Van decides that when she is bigger and able to understand, he will tell her how much her mother loved her. He recognizes that he can say little more, but the promise gives the rescue a future beyond survival: Yuna is to inherit knowledge of the love and protection that preceded her life with him. The episode thus joins two forms of care—the mother’s desperate defense of her child and Van’s patient commitment to keep her story alive.
